In-Home Coin Appraisals and House Calls

Some collections are easier to look at where they already are. JP Ford Coin & Currency offers in-home coin, currency, bullion and estate evaluations for households throughout the Myrtle Beach area, in addition to walk-in and appointment visits at our Longs, South Carolina showroom.

  • No obligation to sell
  • Discreet and unhurried, in your home
  • Walk-ins still welcome at the Longs shop

House calls are $75 plus $35 per hour, with about two days' notice, and every visit is confirmed personally by phone. Availability depends on your location, the size of the collection and scheduling.

Who a House Call Is For

A house call makes the most sense when a collection is large, heavy or awkward to move — several safes, boxes of silver, an entire room a relative filled over decades — or when the person responsible for it cannot easily transport it themselves. That covers a lot of situations: an inherited collection nobody in the family has gone through, an estate being settled, an accumulation built up over a lifetime, or simply a seller who is not mobile enough to carry it into the shop.

It is not the only option, and it is not always the better one. A small collection, a handful of coins, or anything that fits comfortably in a bag is usually just as easy, and often quicker, to bring to the Longs showroom during our regular hours.

  • Coins of every kind

US and world coins, colonial through modern, pre-1965 silver, key dates, error coins, and certified holders from PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG alongside raw, uncertified pieces.

  • Paper currency

Silver certificates, United States notes, National Bank Notes, large-size type notes, fractional currency, and Confederate and obsolete notes, including South Carolina issues.

  • Gold and silver bullion

American Eagles, bars, rounds and other bullion, evaluated against the live metals market at the time of the visit.

  • Qualifying gold and silver jewelry

Sterling flatware and holloware, scrap gold, and gold or silver jewelry found alongside a coin or currency collection.

  • World and ancient coins

Foreign coins, tokens, medals and ancient issues where applicable — common in collections built up through travel or trade over many years.

  • Complete collections and estates

Whole accumulations, organized or not, including material mixed in with an estate that has not yet been sorted at all.

Before, During and After a House Call

What to expect from the first phone call to the end of the visit.

  1. Request an Appointment

Tell us generally what is involved and where you are located. You do not need an inventory or a firm idea of value first.

  2. We Talk It Through by Phone

We confirm the details, discuss whether an in-home visit or a trip to the Longs showroom fits better, and schedule a time. Every house call is confirmed personally, not automatically booked.

  3. Before the Visit

There is nothing to prepare. Please do not clean or polish anything — it can permanently reduce value. Leave albums, boxes and paperwork as they are; old notes or labels can be useful even if you cannot read what they mean.

  4. During the Visit

Walter or Joe Ford examines the material in your home, methodically and at a reasonable pace, and explains what they find as they go. Family members are welcome to stay in the room throughout.

  5. After the Visit

You receive a clear explanation of what the collection contains and what drives its value. If you would like an offer, we can make one. If not, that is a complete and normal outcome on its own.

  6. You Decide What Happens Next

Keep the collection, divide it among family, get a second opinion, or sell some or all of it. Nothing about the visit itself requires a decision on the spot.

An Appraisal, an Evaluation and a Purchase Offer Are Three Different Things

An evaluation is simply looking at what you have and explaining it — what it is, roughly what condition it is in, and what drives its worth. An appraisal is more formal documentation, useful for insurance, estate or legal purposes. A purchase offer is a separate decision: what our shop is willing to pay if you choose to sell.

A house call can be any one of these, or none of them followed by a sale. Visiting your home does not commit you to selling anything, and we try to keep the three ideas distinct rather than letting them blur together.

Sometimes the Shop Is the Better Option

A house call is not always the right call. If a collection is small enough to carry comfortably, an in-store visit is usually quicker to arrange and puts our full reference library and equipment at hand. Walk-ins are always welcome at our Longs showroom, Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM — no appointment required, and you get the same attention either way.

Large collections, heavy accumulations, estates, or situations where transportation is genuinely difficult are where a house call earns its place. If you are not sure which fits, call us and we will help you decide.

Privacy, Professionalism and Respect for Family Property

A house call often means letting someone into your home to go through a collection that carries family history, not just monetary value. We take that seriously. Visits are conducted quietly and professionally, without pressure, and what is discussed in your home stays between you and us.

This is especially true for inherited and estate collections, where the people handling the material are often not the ones who assembled it. You are never required to know what you have before we arrive, and you are never required to sell after we leave.

Communities We Generally Serve

House calls are generally available throughout Longs, Little River, North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Conway, Loris, Calabash, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Shallotte. Availability depends on distance, the size of the collection and our current schedule, so the best way to confirm a visit is to reach out directly.

If you are closer to the north end of the Grand Strand, see our page for coin buying in North Myrtle Beach and Little River. If you are across the state line, see our page for coin buying in Calabash and Shallotte.

House Call Questions

Answers to what people ask us most before requesting an in-home visit.

Am I required to sell anything after a house call?

No. A house call is an evaluation, not a commitment. Many people ask us to visit only to find out what a collection contains, and decide later, if at all, whether to sell.

How far do you travel for a house call?

We generally travel within about 25 miles of our Longs showroom, which covers Little River, North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Conway, Loris and nearby parts of southeastern North Carolina, including Calabash and Shallotte. Reach out with your location and we will confirm whether a visit is practical.

What does a house call cost?

House calls are $75 plus $35 per hour, with no separate mileage charge within our usual travel area. There is no cost for an in-store visit, where the first half hour is always free.

How much notice do you need?

Roughly two days in most cases. We confirm every house call personally by phone rather than booking it automatically, so exact timing depends on our current schedule.

Who actually comes to my home?

Walter or Joe Ford, in person. You will not be handing a family collection over to someone you have not spoken with beforehand.

What if I decide a shop visit makes more sense instead?

That is a common and reasonable choice, especially for smaller collections. Walk-ins are welcome at our Longs showroom Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, no appointment needed, and you can also book a time in advance if you would rather.

Still have a question specific to your situation? Call the shop and we will walk through it with you.
