Probate Coin Collection Appraisals

JP Ford Coin & Currency provides numismatic appraisal and documentation for executors, personal representatives, attorneys and estates handling coins, currency and precious metals during probate. We are a coin dealership, not a law firm, and do not provide legal or tax advice.

  • Documentation prepared for estate administration
  • Available in-shop or on-site
  • Direct contact with attorneys and CPAs welcome

Requirements vary by estate and jurisdiction. We recommend confirming what your estate needs with your attorney, accountant or other professional adviser.

Coins Are an Unusually Difficult Estate Asset

A coin collection does not value itself the way a bank account or a listed security does. Face value rarely reflects market value, bullion value does not necessarily reflect numismatic value, and a collection built up over decades can mix common material with genuinely rare pieces in the same box. Certification can materially affect what a coin is worth and how easily it can be sold, and precious-metal prices move with the market from one day to the next.

An executor or personal representative needs an organized, well-supported way to document what a collection actually contains before it can be valued, divided or sold as part of the estate.

How a Probate Appraisal Works

A straightforward process built around what your estate actually needs.

  1. Initial Consultation

We talk through the size and location of the collection, the type of material involved, what the estate needs, and the documentation you are looking for.

  2. Collection Access

Evaluation can take place at our Longs showroom, or on-site where that is more practical for the estate.

  3. Examination

We go through the collection and identify what it contains, to the level of detail the estate's documentation requires.

  4. Valuation

Values are based on current numismatic and precious-metal market information, applied to the stated purpose and any valuation date provided for the appraisal.

  5. Documentation

You receive appraisal documentation that matches what we actually provide. Tell us in advance what the estate needs so we can confirm we can meet it.

  6. Follow-Up

We remain available afterward for questions from the executor, personal representative or attorney. If the estate later decides to sell some or all of the collection, we can discuss an offer at that time. The appraisal itself does not require the estate to sell to us.

Purpose and Valuation Date

Probate and tax matters can call for a value as of a particular date, and requirements differ by estate, jurisdiction and purpose. We are not able to advise on which valuation date or documentation standard applies to your situation.

What we ask is that you tell us the purpose of the appraisal, any required valuation date, and the documentation you need. We recommend confirming those requirements with the estate's attorney, accountant or other professional adviser before or alongside the appraisal.

Appraisal and Purchase Are Separate Decisions

An appraisal documents what a collection contains and what it is worth for a stated purpose. A decision to sell, and any offer we might make, is separate from that. Receiving an appraisal from us does not obligate the estate to sell the collection to JP Ford Coin & Currency, and we try to keep that distinction clear throughout the process.

Working With Estate Attorneys and Professional Advisers

We welcome direct contact from estate attorneys, probate attorneys, CPAs, trustees and professional executors or personal representatives, not only from family members. If a probate matter you are handling involves coins, currency, bullion or precious metals, we are glad to be the local numismatic resource you bring it to.

Documentation for Your Records

We can prepare a written summary covering the decedent, the estate, the personal representative or attorney, the purpose and valuation date of the appraisal, and a general description of the collection, to support your estate file. Contact us to discuss the documentation your estate needs.

Questions From Executors, Attorneys and Advisers

Straightforward answers about how a probate appraisal is handled.

Is JP Ford Coin & Currency able to provide legal or tax advice?

No. We are a coin, currency and precious-metals dealership, not a law firm or accounting firm. We can document and appraise numismatic and precious-metal property, but questions about probate procedure, required valuation dates or tax treatment should go to the estate's attorney, accountant or other professional adviser.

Can the appraisal reflect a specific valuation date, such as date of death?

Tell us the purpose of the appraisal and any valuation date the estate requires, and we will prepare the appraisal accordingly. We recommend confirming the correct valuation date with your attorney or accountant, since requirements vary by estate and purpose.

Do you work directly with attorneys and CPAs, or only with family members?

Both. We regularly communicate directly with estate attorneys, accountants and professional executors or personal representatives about a collection, in addition to working with family members.

If the estate later decides to sell, can JP Ford make an offer?

Yes. If the estate chooses to sell some or all of the collection after the appraisal, we are glad to discuss a purchase offer at that time. That decision is entirely separate from the appraisal itself.

What level of detail can the appraisal documentation include?

The level of itemization depends on the collection and what the estate needs, from a general summary to a more detailed accounting of individual items. Tell us what your documentation requirements are during the initial consultation so we can confirm we can meet them.

How do you handle a collection that mixes common coins with rare or certified pieces?

We examine and document each item on its own terms rather than treating the collection as a single lot. Common and rare material, and raw and certified coins, are identified and valued individually as part of the same appraisal.
