A jar of old silver coins is usually worth about its silver content, and we will tell you so plainly. But a single scarce date, mint mark or variety mixed in with ordinary coins can be worth far more than its metal, and it looks almost the same as the coins around it. The same is true of paper money: a note that looks like any other silver certificate can carry a premium because of its series, signatures or serial number.

That is why we go through a collection piece by piece before anything is priced as metal. It is the part of the work a coin shop does every day, and it is worth having done before a collection is sold, not after.

Many older U.S. notes, including most silver certificates, trade close to face value, while certain series, signatures, serial numbers and condition can make a note worth considerably more. National Bank Notes, large-size notes and obsolete currency are often worth having looked at individually.
