Sell Gold in Longs, SC and the Myrtle Beach Area

JP Ford Coin and Currency is a family-owned coin shop in Longs, South Carolina, that buys gold coins, gold bullion, jewelry and scrap gold from sellers across the Myrtle Beach area. Because we are coin dealers, we check every gold coin for collector value before we treat it as metal.

  • Gold coins checked for collector value first
  • Bullion priced against the live market
  • No obligation to sell

Walk-ins are welcome. Booking simply holds a set time so you do not wait your turn.

  • U.S. gold coins

Gold dollars, $2.50 and $3 gold pieces, $5 and $10 Liberty and Indian Head gold coins, and $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens double eagles. Many older U.S. gold coins carry collector value above their gold content, so each one is identified individually.

  • Gold Eagles and Buffaloes

American Gold Eagles in all four sizes (1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and one ounce) and the one-ounce American Gold Buffalo. Bullion coins are priced against the live gold market at the time you sell, which you can check on your own phone while you sit with us.

  • World gold bullion coins

South African Krugerrands, Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, Austrian Gold Philharmonics, British Gold Britannias, Australian Gold Kangaroos, Mexican Gold Libertads and Chinese Gold Pandas.

  • Older world gold coins

British gold sovereigns and half sovereigns, French and Swiss 20 franc gold, Mexican 50 pesos Centenarios, and Austrian 20 and 100 corona restrikes. Some are bullion, some are collectible, and a few are both.

  • Gold jewelry and scrap

Rings, chains, bracelets, class rings, wedding bands, pendants and earrings, in 10K, 14K, 18K or higher, including broken chains, dented rings, pieces with missing stones and odd earrings. A piece does not have to be wearable or pretty for the gold in it to have value.

  • Gold bars, rounds and ingots

Gold bars, rounds and ingots in any size, from small bars to larger pieces, from refiners and mints. Bring whatever you have, with any assay card or packaging if you still have it. Bars and rounds are priced against the live gold market at the time you sell.

How Gold Is Valued

For gold, value starts with weight, purity and the current gold price. Purity, also called fineness, is the share of the item that is actually gold: 10K is 41.7%, 14K is 58.3%, 18K is 75% and 24K is pure gold. An American Gold Eagle is 22K (91.67% gold) and a Gold Buffalo is 99.99%. Weight multiplied by purity gives the gold content, and that content multiplied by today's gold price gives the melt value.

You can watch the live gold price on our live metal prices page. Melt value is a reference point, not a purchase price: what a dealer pays also reflects refining costs, current demand and the quantity involved. We explain how we reached our number, and because bullion is priced against the live market you can check it on your own phone.

When Gold Coins Are Worth More Than Their Gold

Older U.S. gold coins, particularly those from before 1933, can carry collector value well above their gold content. Date, mint mark, condition and certification all matter: two coins with identical gold content can be worth very different amounts depending on which mint struck them and how well they have survived.

That is why we identify every gold coin before anything is treated as metal. Modern bullion coins such as American Gold Eagles are valued mainly on their gold content, and we will tell you plainly when a coin is simply worth its gold. Please do not clean or polish your coins: it can permanently reduce their collector value.

How Selling Gold Works

From the moment you walk in to a decision, here is what happens.

  1. Bring It In As It Is

There is no need to sort coins from jewelry, test anything, or clean anything. Walk in during business hours, or book a time so we are ready for you. For a large amount or if getting to the shop is difficult, we can also come to you: see our in-home appraisals.

  2. Gold Coins Are Identified First

We go through the coins at the table with you and set aside anything with collector value, so nothing scarce ends up priced as metal.

  3. Jewelry and Scrap Are Tested and Weighed

We check the metal content of your jewelry and scrap, weigh it, and explain what each piece is as we go. Bullion is priced against the live gold market.

  4. You Decide

We make an offer and explain how we reached it. You can sell everything, sell some and keep the rest, or take it all home. If you accept, you are paid the same day, and most purchases are paid in cash.

Selling Silver Too, or a Whole Collection?

We buy silver as well as gold. Our silver buying page covers junk silver, silver coins, bullion and sterling, and our Sell to Us page covers everything else we buy, including paper money, certified coins and complete collections. If the gold came from a relative's estate, our estate coin appraisals page explains how we help families work through an inherited collection.

Gold Buying Questions

What people ask us most before selling gold.

Who buys gold near Myrtle Beach

Who buys gold near Myrtle Beach?

JP Ford Coin and Currency in Longs, South Carolina, buys gold coins, gold bullion, jewelry and scrap gold from sellers throughout the Myrtle Beach area. You can walk in during business hours or book an appraisal. Because we are coin dealers, we check gold coins for collector value before treating them as metal.

Do you buy gold coins?

Yes. We buy U.S. gold coins from gold dollars through $20 double eagles, American Gold Eagles and Buffaloes, and world gold coins including Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, Philharmonics, Britannias, Kangaroos, Libertads, Pandas and British sovereigns. Each gold coin is identified individually, since many older ones are worth more than the gold in them.

Do you buy scrap gold and broken jewelry?

Yes. Broken chains, single earrings, dented rings and jewelry with missing stones all contain gold, and a piece does not have to be wearable or pretty for the gold in it to have value. We look at scrap gold with you and explain what each piece is before making an offer.

Do you buy gold bars, rounds and ingots?

Yes. We buy gold bars, rounds and ingots as well as bullion coins such as American Gold Eagles, Buffaloes, Krugerrands and Maple Leafs. Bullion is priced against the live gold market at the time you sell.

Can you buy my gold if I do not know the karat?

Yes. Many pieces are unstamped or the stamp has worn away. We look at the piece with you to find out what it is, so you do not need to know the karat, or whether a piece is solid gold, gold-filled or plated, before you bring it in.

Gold and its value

How is gold valued when I sell it?

Value starts with weight, purity and the current gold price. Weight multiplied by purity gives the gold content, and that content multiplied by today's gold price gives the melt value. What a dealer pays also reflects refining costs, demand and quantity. You can see the live gold price on our live metal prices page.

What do the karat stamps on gold jewelry mean?

The karat stamp shows how much of the piece is pure gold. 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.3% and 18K is 75%. European pieces are often stamped with a three-digit number instead, such as 417, 585 or 750, which means the same thing. A stamp is a useful starting point, but we still check the metal before making an offer.

Is a gold coin always worth more than the gold it contains?

Not always. Modern bullion coins such as American Gold Eagles are valued mainly on their gold content. Older U.S. gold coins, particularly those from before 1933, can carry collector value above their gold content depending on date, mint mark and condition. Each coin needs to be identified individually to know which applies.

How can I tell if jewelry is solid gold, gold-filled or plated?

Look for the stamp. Solid gold is marked with its karat, such as 10K, 14K or 18K. Marks such as GF, GP, GEP or HGE mean gold-filled or gold-plated, which contain far less gold. If you are not sure what you have, bring it in and we will tell you.

Should I clean old gold coins or jewelry before selling?

Please do not clean coins: cleaning can permanently reduce their collector value. Jewelry does not need to be cleaned either, and a broken or tarnished piece is worth the same to us as a clean one.

Selling gold to us

Do I need an appointment to sell gold?

No. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours and get the same attention as anyone else. Booking an appraisal simply holds a set time for you so you are not waiting your turn, which is worth doing if you are driving in from a distance or bringing a large amount.

Can you come to my home to look at gold?

Yes. For a large amount, or if getting to the shop is difficult, we can arrange an in-home appointment. See our in-home coin appraisals page for how it works.

Can I sell only part of my gold and keep the rest?

Yes. After we go through what you brought, you can sell all of it, sell only certain pieces, or keep everything. Many people sell scrap jewelry and keep coins or pieces with sentimental value.

How do I know your offer for my gold is fair?

You watch us reach it. We go through the gold at the table with you, explain what each item is and how the number was worked out, and bullion is priced against the live gold market, which you can check on your own phone. There is no obligation to sell, and you are welcome to take your gold home.

Do you pay cash for gold?

Most purchases are paid in cash, on the same day you accept our offer. For larger amounts we will tell you at the time what payment methods we can offer. There is no waiting period, and no obligation to sell.

Have a question about a particular piece? Call the shop and we will walk through it with you.
