This is an 1862 $2 obsolete banknote issued by the Bank of the State of South Carolina, payable at their office in Charleston, SC. Catalog reference SC-45-G30. Serial number 81 — a notably low number for this issue.
The face features a central vignette of an eagle with spread wings, flanked by large ornate "2" counters at upper left and upper right, and portrait medallions of a statesman at left and right. The text reads "The President and Directors of the Bank of the State of South Carolina promise to pay … TWO DOLLARS" with "CHARLESTON, S.C. Feb 14 1862" as the date. Handwritten signatures of the Cashier and President are present.
The reverse is unprinted. The note shows age-consistent toning and handling consistent with its over 160-year history, and retains all design elements in clearly legible condition.
