The Shield Nickel was the first five-cent piece struck in nickel by the United States Mint, introducing a distinctive design featuring a shield on the obverse and a large numeral "5" on the reverse. This example dates to the 1866–1867 period, an early chapter in the series. A solid addition to a collection of 19th-century U.S. coinage or early nickel type coins.
