The 1873 Shield Nickel Open 3 is a distinctive variety of the five-cent piece, identifiable by the open form of the "3" in the date. The obverse displays the heraldic shield with "IN GOD WE TRUST" above, while the reverse shows "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" surrounding a large "5 CENTS" with a ring of stars. This example grades Good-4.
