The 1892 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar is one of the most historically significant classic commemoratives ever struck by the United States Mint. Issued to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago, it holds the distinction of being the first commemorative coin produced by the U.S. Mint for general public sale. The obverse features a bold portrait of Columbus, while the reverse displays the flagship Santa María above two hemispheres of the globe. A genuine piece of American numismatic history, this half dollar makes a natural centerpiece in any classic commemorative or U.S. type collection.
